9. Rev. Benjamin John CARTER was born on 23 Apr 1839 in Lauderdale Co, MS. He died on 22 Apr 1918 in Hood Co, TX. He was buried in Mt. Pleasant Community Cem, Tolar, Hood Co, TX. Joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church 17 Nov 1860. He was liberated to preach 11 Jan 1868 and ordained May 1870.
Volunteered into Co. C, 12th Regment, AR Infantry in 1861. Was captured at Port Hudson, LA 9 July 1863 and paroled from there 12/13 July 1865. He fought through the war without a wound.
Edward Laurence Carter wrote in his autobiography that the family came from Ark to Tx. in an oxcart in 1876, stopping "at Aunt Nancy Jackson's on the way."

He was married to Caroline LEWIS on 6 Sep 1865 in AR. Caroline LEWIS was born on 26 Apr 1841 in MS. She died on 28 Mar 1904. She was buried in Mt. Pleasant Community Cem, Tolar, Hood Co, TX. Rev. Benjamin John CARTER and Caroline LEWIS had the following children:

33 i. William Everett CARTER was born on 29 Jul 1866. He died on 4 Aug 1868. He was buried in Bluff City, Ouachita Co (now Nevada Co), AR, Bluff City Cem.
34 ii. Edward Lawrence CARTER was born on 8 Apr 1868 in AR. He died on 5 Apr 1962.
35 iii. Gertrude Pricilla CARTER was born on 18 Sep 1871. She died on 18 Feb 1911.
36 iv. John Judson Byars "Jud" CARTER was born on 18 Mar 1873. He died on 13 May 1937.
37 v. Claudius Pendleton "Claud" CARTER was born on 14 Jun 1875. He died on 9 Jun 1947.
38 vi. Lillie Myrtle CARTER was born on 15 Oct 1881 in Hood Co, TX. She died on 28 Nov 1968. She was buried in Childress Co, TX, Tell Cem.
